Easy Working from home? Not really. With Internet access almost everywhere and a more than 70% home market penetration, you would think that a lot more people would be working from home, and living the dream. There are more possibilities and home business opportunities than ever before in our history. Even traditional business companies are trying to find ways to make it happen.
However, even if they are successful, most people find that easy working from home is not quite as great as they expected. Yes, you do get to have a lot more family time and have more control over your life, but there are some specific drawbacks. You may be surprised at the feeling of isolation one might experience after being accustomed to working in an office environment for a long time. Suddenly, that easy working at home isn’t-there are with no co-workers to confer with over a problem or simple over the water cooler. That can get surprisingly lonely very quickly. You’ll need to find ways to get out of the house and back into the world or might you may find that you become quite isolated and rarely leave the house.
Additionally, most people have trouble being on their own with no boss to look over their shoulder. It may come as a surprise to find out that you greatly prefer to have someone else give directions and you are not that self-starter you thought you were! Even if you are working from home it can still be a very big challenge when unexpected situations come up that you may not immediately have answers to. While it may be nice to not have a boss, or be able to limit contact with one because you work from home, not everyone is cut out for it.
Another thing that can become an issue is separating work from your home life. For most people, they leave work every day and they can leave it behind to live their “real” lives. But when your work is at home, the lines can begin to blur and there is no way to get away from work. Even if you are not a natural workaholic, work can be difficult to get away from as you may begin to feel driven to complete everything until is seems that you are always working.
These are only a few considerations of what keeps easy working from home more of a challenge than a gift. Not everyone is cut out to do it and you may not know for sure whether you are until you try for yourself.
